Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care analyzes the spine to ensure connections from the brain are flowing optimally by identifying and removing subluxations. Subluxations are when a region of the spine is misaligned, preventing proper flow of nervous system communication throughout our bodies. Subluxations can be caused by chemical, physical, and/or emotional stress. This ranges from bad posture to car accidents to not sleeping properly or stressing about work. A chiropractic adjustment is a safe and powerful way to remove subluxation and restore optimal function to your body.

Pediatric Care
Chiropractic care can be helpful for your child's development, from infancy into adolescence. At Optimal You, we firmly believe in protecting a child’s body by making sure they have the best possible functioning nervous system. We all say that children bounce back quickly, but that is related to how they emotionally feel; however physically and structurally, that is not always the case. Many times, what may be considered a minor issue at first can progress into major growing pains, so that is why we’ve implemented proactive wellness programs for children.

Optimal You can provide your child with the drug-free care they need to function at their best through the early stages of life; from birth and beyond. We accomplish this through checking your child’s spinal alignment as early as just a few weeks old to ensure the trauma of the birthing process and all those tumbles and falls don’t impede their development.

We also monitor for primitive reflexes and developmental milestones. Our various treatment methods can help children meet these milestones as expected or help those who may be having trouble. Primitive reflexes are reflex actions originating in the central nervous system that are exhibited by normal infants, but not in adults. These reflexes are absent due to the development of the frontal lobes as a child transitions normally into adulthood. If they persist beyond the expected age, this can give us insight into developmental delays.

How does chiropractic care benefit children?
  • Sleep issues
  • Colicky baby
  • Ear aches
  • Acid reflux
  • (Silent) reflux
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • ADHD
  • Wetting the bed
  • and more

Webster Technique
Pregnancy is another time where our bodies go through an enormous amount of change very quickly. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can ensure a less traumatic birth process for both mom and baby. There are many gentle techniques that can be used throughout pregnancy, or even before conception to help a woman prepare her body for what is to come. Webster Technique is one of these, and Dr. Lexie Romero is certified by the ICPA to utilize Webster to ensure optimal positioning of the pelvis for child birth. Chiropractic care throughout and post pregnancy will allow the body to heal and express health at its fullest potential.

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing, neuro-biomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved. The ICPA recognizes that in a theoretical and clinical framework of the Webster Technique in the care of pregnant women, sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e., dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.

In this clinical and theoretical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may contribute to these three primary causes of dystocia via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth.

How is chiropractic care beneficial throughout pregnancy?
  • Maintaining an overall healthier pregnancy
  • Optimal pelvic alignment
  • Controlling symptoms of nausea
  • Fetal positional changes
  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain
  • Reducing the time of labor and delivery
  • Promote optimal positioning for delivery

Sports Injury
Biomechanical alterations make athletes more susceptible to injuries. Targeting specific muscles in training will help counteract these dysfunctions, restore proper mechanics, and increase neuromuscular control. IASTM is a unique, evidence-based form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively and efficiently address soft tissue lesions and fascial restrictions resulting in improved patient outcomes. At OYBC we use specially designed instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver an effective means of manual therapy. The use of the IASTM instruments, when combined with appropriate therapeutic exercise, leads to the restoration of pain-free movement and function. The instruments also are used diagnostically to assess the kinetic chain, in an efficient manner using the principles of regional interdependence. Kinesiology Tape can be used to treat sports and non-sports injuries, including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, and back pain. K-Tape microscopically lifts the skin away from the muscle and fascia below, creating a decompressive effect.

Common Injuries Treated at OYBC Include
  • Lateral & Medial Epicondylitis
  • Hamstring Injury
  • Sprain/ Strains
  • Rotator Cuff injuries
  • ShinSplints
  • Concussion
  • Back Pain
  • Headaches
  • Knee injury
  • Achilles Tendon Pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Ankle Injury

Activator Technique
The Activator Method uses a small, hand-held instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra or joint. It is an alternative to the traditional manual form of spinal manipulation, known as the high-velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust. Low force, no twisting or popping, but equally as effective activator is the preferred method of treatment for patients who desire a low impact alternative.

Pain Management
Chiropractic is a system of therapy focused on the structure of the body, particularly the spine. Chiropractors manipulate the body's alignment to relieve pain and improve function and to help the body heal itself. While the mainstay of chiropractic is spinal manipulation, chiropractic care may also include other treatments, including manual or manipulative therapies, postural and exercise education, and ergonomic training (how to walk, sit, and stand to limit back strain). Research has focused on spinal manipulation for low back pain. As one of the alternatives to pain-relieving drugs, the American College of Physicians low back pain guideline recommends spinal manipulation along with heat, massage, and acupuncture. Chiropractic therapy popular primarily for two big reasons: it is a cost-effective, safe alternative to other forms of treatment for chronic pain and it experiences a high rate of client satisfaction. Many pain sufferers do not want to use medication or undergo surgery. Spinal manipulation has been deemed an effective treatment for lower back pain and has been proven to reduce pain, advance physical therapy progress and decrease reliance on potentially addictive and harmful pain medications. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recommends chiropractic care as a first line treatment for acute low back pain in adults.

Chiropractic intervention can benefit those suffering from chronic and acute pain in the following areas
  • Low Back pain
  • Upper Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Hip Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Extremity Pain
  • Numbness & Tingling

Adult & Elderly Care
Chiropractic care is a healing art that focuses on a healthy lifestyle and believes in the function of the nervous system at an optimum level to achieve that lifestyle. Beginning at the spine and extending out, chiropractic care stresses wellness care within the idea that many ailments are the result of the body’s inability to properly heal itself. Chiropractic care believes that proper function of the nervous system helps restore the body’s innate healing ability from infancy to adulthood. Various techniques are used to address each patient concerns safely, and effectively in all stages of life.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy works on the treatment of injury, disease, and disorders through the use of physical methods. These physical methods include exercise, massages, movement and manipulation of the trouble area, and other various treatments such as medication and surgery. Musculoskeletal physiotherapy can be used to treat injuries such as sprains, back pain, muscle strains, arthritis, and posture problems. Neurological physiotherapy helps heal problems within the nervous system. These disorders can include stroke, spinal cord injuries, and Parkinson’s disease. The three most common types of treatment therapies include manual therapies, exercise programs, and electrotherapy techniques. Manual therapy may include treating the problem area through joint manipulation, mobilization, resistance training, and stretching. Physiotherapy also utilizes exercise therapies such as muscle training, strength training, and cardiovascular training.

Some treatments offered include
  • Therapeutic Ultrasound
  • Interferential Current
  • Russian Stim
  • Hot & Cold Therapies
  • IASTM
  • K-Tape
  • Vibration Therapies
  • Trigger Point Release
  • Resistance training

Migraines and Headaches
Nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea. Research shows that Chiropractic Adjustments may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. A 2014 report in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) found that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain and increased benefit was shown in several instances where a multimodal approach to neck pain had been used1. Also, a 2011 JMPT study found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches.
Headache Triggers
Headaches have many causes, or “triggers.” These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.). About 5 percent of all headaches are warning signals caused by physical problems. The remaining 95 percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. These types of headaches are not caused by disease; the headache itself is the primary concern. The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, Americans engage in more sedentary activities than in the past, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture (such as sitting in front of a computer). This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache.

What can OYBC Do?

  • Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your system.
  • Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and identify headache triggers while creating a plan to minimize them.
  • Offer advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.
